CBE selects Steven Globerman as its 2012 Distinguished Research Fellow

Western Washington University’s College of Business and Economics has selected Steven Globerman as its 2012 Distinguished Research Fellow.

The Distinguished Research Fellow Award recognizes a tenured faculty member in the College of Business and Economics who has demonstrated sustained excellence through his or her scholarly contributions to research, creative scholarship, and publication while at WWU’s College of Business and Economics.

Globerman is the Kaiser Professor of International Business and Director of the Center for International Business at Western. He has published extensively on public policy and management issues related to international business, and recently published several monographs and articles related to the economic impacts of foreign direct investment.

In addition, Globerman has conducted research with Paul Storer of Western’s Department of Economics concerning the impact of post-9/11 border security developments on Canada-U.S. trade patterns and volumes. Some of this research appeared in a book entitled “The Impact of 9/11 on Canada-U.S. Trade,” published by the University of Toronto Press. Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade included this book on its list of “Five Recent Must Reads.”

Globerman’s work is highly respected by those in his field. A research colleague of Globerman noted that “there can be no doubt that he is one of the most influential international business scholars in the world.” Another colleague notes that “Globerman’s work is often a useful guide for government policy makers and/or business leaders. His arguments are often so convincing that his ideas find their way into practice. He is the type of economist that business schools need in order to be relevant.”

Globerman teaches regularly in Western’s MBA program. He was voted the MBA Professor of the Year for 2009-2010 by the students. He also engages extensively in professional activities including serving on the editorial boards of several leading international business journals and reviewing research grant proposals for government granting agencies in North America and Europe.

Globerman’s research led to his appointment to a special committee established by the Auditor General of Canada to evaluate the performance of Canada’s Border Services Agency. He also served as a research advisor to Industry Canada on matters related to public policies affecting international trade and investment.

Prior to joining Western’s College of Business and Economics, Globerman held tenured positions at York University and Simon Fraser University. He has been a visiting professor in international business programs at the Stockholm School of Economics and the Helsinki School of Economics, among other schools.
