Carver construction: Updates for the weeks of Jan. 10

Construction work on the Carver Academic Facility renovation continues to progress well on the Western Washington University campus.

During the week of Jan. 10, workers will:

  • Continue demolition.
  • Continue abatement of crawlspace in the 1935 building (the original gymnasium) and ceilings in gymnasiums A, B and C in the main 1960 building.
  • Continue micro pile drilling in south section.

The schedule for next week, Jan. 17 to 23, looks like this:

  • Continue demolition.
  • Continue abatement of the ceilings in gyms A, B and C.
  • Continue core drilling of piles in 1935 building.
  • Continue underground plumbing work.
  • Continue underground electrical work.
  • Continues excavation for building foundation.

Based on geotechnical reports, there’s a likelihood of encountering rock when excavating for plumbing systems at the end of January and beginning of February. The work will take place on the north end of the construction site, near Bond Hall, and will continue for several weeks. A large excavator and concrete breaker will create very loud and deep rumbling noises and vibrations.

The Office of Facilities Development and Capital Budget will notify campus as soon as the need for this work is confirmed.
