Campus events planned for Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week Nov. 14-17

Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is November 12 through November 20

Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is an annual program where people come together across the country to draw attention to the problems of hunger and homelessness. Participating groups spend the week holding a series of educational, service, fundraising, and advocacy events.

Hunger and Homelessness happens across the country, even at Western. According to a survey of Western Students, 4 in 10 students experienced some degree of food insecurity in the last 30 days, while 32.1% of students experienced some degree of housing insecurity.

WWU, along with the WWU Basic Needs program, Off Campus Living and the Western Success Scholars program invite you to participate in these events!

SNAP webinar: Monday, Nov. 14 from 3-4 p.m.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as Basic Food in Washington, helps people buy groceries each month and avoid hunger.

This webinar will introduce students to the eligibility requirements and application logistics, discuss the similar Food Assistance Program available for non-citizens, and give tips on how to overcome barriers with the application process. Attendees will also have the opportunity to anonymously ask questions.

Hungry to Learn Documentary: Tuesday, Nov. 15 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in VU 552

Hungry to Learn introduces the faces behind an American crisis — college students so strapped to pay tuition that they don’t have enough money to eat or a place to live. A lack of food is just a symptom of the American Dream of a college education slipping out of reach. This documentary is not just about the devastating hunger crisis unfolding on American campuses, it is about what can — and should — be done about it. Join us for a viewing of the movie with discussion time to follow. Snacks included
