Art show focuses on recovery, resilience

An art show illuminating the idea of "recovery" is on display in the B Gallery on the Western Washington University campus through Feb. 6.

The show is being put on by BRAVE, Western's suicide prevention program. BRAVE, which stands for Building Resilience And Voicing Empathy, is funded by a three-year grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration from the U.S. Department of Human Services.

One of BRAVE's most important ideas is that of resilience. To recover is to be resilient, and to be resilient is to learn to how to take care of yourself. As attendees view the works that the artists have made in honor of their own or an affiliate's process of recovery, they might feel empowered to make changes in your own lives—to practice self-care and coping techniques when they are faced with challenging circumstances.

A dinner reception with judging and prizes will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Feb. 5.
