Area east of Miller Hall restricted while building is under construction

Construction and demolition of phase two of the Miller Hall project began Sept. 13. The demolition phase of interior building systems is progressing as planned and is scheduled to be completed by the middle of December.

The demolition phase involves the salvage, removal and separation of material into recyclable groups: metals, concrete, wood. The large recycle containers on the construction site are hauled off site and replaced on a daily basis.

The logistics of hauling off site and replacing large recycle containers makes East College Way east of Miller Hall a congested and potentially dangerous thoroughfare.

Western Facilities Management has the following suggestions for minimizing risks during the construction of Miller Hall Phase II:

  • Avoid the area east of Miller Hall (between Miller Hall and the Sehome Arboretum), especially East College Way.
  • Do not walk or ride your bicycle along East College Way between Miller Hall and the arboretum, east of the building.
  • Alternate routes have been provided for your safety. Be aware of the signage that has been installed to direct you away from the construction activity in this area. Plan ahead and take the extra few minutes needed to ensure you arrive safely to class, your appointment or to your office.

With the return of shorter daylight hours, cloudy gray days and rain, it becomes more and more important that the Western community exercises good judgment and caution when in the vicinity of Miller Hall. Those who must drive along East College Way between Miller Hall and the arboretum should do so with an extra sense of awareness and safety in mind, driving slowly and watching for pedestrians, bicyclists, construction workers and construction traffic.
