Western Washington University’s College of Business and Economics (CBE) will offer a new course on an innovative system design, with an information session taking place at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 20 in Western's Academic Instructional Center West room 302.

The class, titled Innovation Engineering I: Create, will be taught by Dan Purdy, adjunct professor of Marketing. Purdy will work in collaboration with industry expert Denny Organ in the class, which is open to community members and begins April 1.

Students will be introduced to principles of innovation engineering and learn how to transform innovation from being personality driven into a disciplined system approach to help increase the speed of innovation and decrease risk. The emphasis of this course is on learning by doing. The course will consist of online lectures as well as in-class hands-on workshops and exercises.  The focus is on application of knowledge rather than theory alone.

The coursework has been developed in partnership with industry members, including Impact Washington, a nonprofit organization that helps Washington manufacturers compete globally.

Patric Sazama, a certified Innovation Engineering Black Belt with Impact Washington, said he is pleased Western will be offering this course.

“Impact Washington has been working with Innovation Institute and the innovation movement for a number of years. We are extremely pleased to see Western Washington University offering the innovation engineering curriculum,” Sazama said. “Offering this additional educational opportunity to students and the community will provide our region even greater depth and expertise in the fundamentals of innovation engineering.”

This course applies to all industries and professionals, and is designed to help manage the difficult challenges companies face that only innovative thinking can solve. The innovative engineering principles ensure that participants learn the skills needed to bring innovation to their work.
