Dance's Penny Hutchinson choreographs "The Emperor of Atlantis" for Music of Remembrance
Assistant Professor of Dance Penny Hutchinson served as choreographer for a performance of "The Emperor of Atlantis," presented by Music of Remembrance at Benaroya Hall in November 2012.
"The Emperor of Atlantis" is an opera by Viktor Ullmann, who composed more than 20 musical works as a prisoner in the Nazi concentration camp of Terezin. The opera was in rehearsal with prisoners as cast members when Nazi guards shut down production. Ullman and his writing partner, poet Peter Kien, were sent to Auschwitz and perished.
Music of Remembrance is a Seattle organization devoted to remembering musicians who continued to create new works through the Holocaust. It is one of several arts companies that have staged "The Emperor of Atlantis."
