Academic and Career Development Services, which includes Academic Advising, Career Services and the Tutoring Center continued to move toward becoming a more holistic, efficient resource for students during the 2012-13 academic year.

"We have seen a slight uptick in freshmen using Career Services," says Aaron Ignac, assistant director of Operations, "and more students connecting the dots between their college career (major, internships, jobs, leadership roles) and their post-graduation careers."

Other highlights from ACDS:

  • Visits to the Tutoring Center have increased 178 percent over the last five years. The Tutoring Center is becoming a common source of help for more than students who are struggling, Ignac says. The center received one-time funding to increase tutor staffing and collaborated with Extended Education to provide targeted tutoring during summer quarter. The Tutoring Center also implemented "focus areas" within the center for students working on similar projects to sit together and work with each other as well as with a tutor.
  • Pre-Health students are having continued success getting into graduate schools in medical fields: Half of students who applied got into dentistry school, up from 40 percent the previous year. Pharmacy school success was up to 85 percent compared with 55 percent, and successful medical school applications were up to 40 percent compared with 39 percent.
