Activist to speak about the developing world in two events Wednesday

Solange Pierre, a renowned humanitarian and activist, will speak on efforts to protect the civil and constitutional rights of Haitian immigrants within the Dominican Republic during a noon presentation Wednesday, Feb. 23, in the Fairhaven College Auditorium. Through her organization, MUDHA, Pierre has waged an extensive struggle to combat numerous social and legal injustices that many Haitian immigrants and Haitian Dominicans have faced historically and currently within the D.R. While her efforts have put her in peril with Dominican authorities who often refuse to recognize the ongoing problems of an overlooked and exploited population, her efforts have also been awarded with the Women of Courage Award and Robert J. Kennedy Human Rights Award.

Pierre also will speak at 4 p.m. Feb. 23 in Haggard Hall Room 345 as part of the Paths to Global Justice series. In her presentation, “The Role of Women And Activism Within the Developing World,” Pierre will discuss the unique and indispensable roles that women face in developing nations to ensure both justice and human rights demanded on behalf of families and children. She will discuss the challenges that her organization, composed of women fighting for the rights of women, faces on a day-to-day basis.
