Acclaimed painter to speak at Western May 21

Canadian painter Landon Mackenzie will give a public lecture from 4 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, in the Old Main Theater on Western Washington University’s campus.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Mackenzie, an acclaimed Canadian artist, has paintings held by prestigious collections including the National Gallery of Canada, Vancouver Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Ontario and Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Her works on paper and large format canvases have been shown in over 90 exhibitions internationally.

Mackenzie is the first full professor at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. She has influenced students for over 30 years through her role as a guest artist at many Canadian and international art departments and residency projects.

Mackenzie received both the Golden and the Diamond Jubilee Queen Elizabeth II Medals for her outstanding contribution to culture in Canada, and received the inaugural Ian Wallace Award for Excellence in Teaching. In the fall 2014, Mackenzie will present a two-person show with fellow artist Emily Carr at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Emily Carr and Landon Mackenzie: Woodchopper and the Monkey will be exhibited at the Vancouver Art Gallery from September 19, 2014, to March 8, 2015. The exhibition puts together works from these Canadian artists, spanning 106 years of painting.

The lecture is sponsored by the Western Department of Art in the College of Fine and Performing Arts and the Canada House.
