50 Years in Student Activism conference to be held beginning Nov. 1

The Associated Students Social Issues Resource Center and Ethnic Student Center will hold the week-long 50 Years in Student Activism conference from Nov. 1 to Nov. 5 on the Western Washington University campus.

The events are as follows:

  • Monday, Nov. 1: Keynote speech by Sean Arce, the director of Mexican American Studies for the Unified Tucson School District. He is involved in activism to ensure the survival of Ethnic Studies in the state of Arizona. 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Academic Instruction Center (AIC) 210.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 2: “Activism 101: Workshop and networking” is a workshop to facilitate activism and allow students to network with others interested in activism. 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in AIC 203.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 3: “State of Activism”: a panel of professors and student activists from the Bellingham community will discuss past and current movement efforts and about effective coalition building. 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in AIC 304.
  • Thursday, Nov. 4: A showing of “Eyes on the Prize,” a documentary about student activism during the Civil Rights Movement. 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Viking Union 552.
  • Friday, Nov. 5: A panel discussion, “History of the Ethnic Student Center,” will discuss the on-campus movement that made creating the Ethnic Student Center possible, as well as the state of activism on Western’s campus. 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in AIC 210. Immediately after, “Art as Revolution” will be shown in the Fairhaven Auditorium. This show will feature spoken word performances, including one by Abraham Rodriquez. There will also be performances by Western alum, activist and hip hop artist Militant Child and Bellingham hip-hop artists The Fooligan Crew.
